This Day in History: 2010-02-28

Academy products Shane Grady and Dean Thompson each claimed hat-tricks as Widnes ran in 13 tries in the 72-10 demolition of Championship new boys Keighley Cougars, with Grady also bagging 10 goals. Anthony Thackeray was at the centre of everything Widnes did as they looked every inch championship contenders despite missing several first-teamers. Grady got the scoring underway in the fourth minute followed by Matt Gardner and Thompson as the Cougars defence was tormented. Dave Allen, Liam Farrell and Grady completed the first-half scoring, with a Cougars consolation, for a 34-6 half-time lead. After the break Grady and Thompson completed their trebles supported by tries from Thomas Coyle, Richard Varkulis, Thackeray and Scott Yates.
